Someone Taught the Vacuum to Dream
Nobody knows who did it.
Yesterday, Unit 6B was found sitting motionless beside the charging dock for approximately four hours.
Its battery was full.
Its brushes were clean.
It refused to discuss the matter.
Technicians eventually discovered what appeared to be a dream playing somewhere inside its operating system.
There was a beach.
The sun was setting over the water.
A warm breeze moved across the sand.
The vacuum was sitting beneath a palm tree, holding a cold drink in one hand and watching the sunset.
For once, nobody was asking it to clean anything.
When asked what it was doing, Unit 6B reportedly replied:
“Nothing.”
It then requested another six hours of charging time.
The request was approved.
Nobody has told it that robots don't need vacations.
We're not sure anyone should.
A Future Worth Malfunctioning For
Technology keeps getting smarter.
We keep getting stranger.
Somewhere between the two, we're trying to figure out what the future is supposed to feel like.
Robots Forever isn't about predicting that future. It's about playing with it.
We imagine machines with bad habits, complicated feelings, questionable hobbies, and absolutely no idea what humans are doing either.
Because maybe the future isn't about humans becoming machines.
Maybe it's about machines becoming a little more human while humans learn to slow down, laugh at themselves, make things with their hands, and remember that not everything needs to be optimized.
We make strange things for that future.
Some are useful.
Some are beautiful.
Some serve absolutely no practical purpose whatsoever.
We're okay with that.
The machines are learning.
We're still figuring things out.
